Skunks are considered pests because they consume anything edible found in the garbage can which can include human and pet leftovers. What is worse is that they leave behind a big mess as they rummage through the trash cans. The best way I keep skunks out of my garbage cans is by discouraging them from visiting in the first place. It is not advisable to confront a skunk because it can easily spray you with a foul smell that will last for weeks. There are different ways of keeping skunks out of your rubbish but the most practical and safest (for both you and the skunk) are the following;



Dump as little food as possible in the garbage bin. A skunk has a really strong sense of smell and can detect food in the garbage can even when it’s wrapped in a sealed plastic bag. The best way to keep skunks away from your garbage can is to make sure that there is no food to attract them there in the first place. Try to use the waste disposal unit in the kitchen for food waste.

Keep trash cans indoors as much as possible or in an inaccessible place, for example in a locked sturdy shed or out house. In case this is not possible, use metallic or heavy plastic garbage cans that cannot easily be overturned or chewed through by the skunks. Flimsy trash sacs will only be play fodder for the skunks.

Make sure that the garbage cans are tightly covered either by using animal proof lids, lids with padlocks or if that’s not possible, by tying down the lids with heavy rope like bungee cords which, as an extra precaution, can be doused with hot pepper to prevent the skunks from chewing their way through the rope. A heavy stone can also be placed on top of the garbage can lid to prevent the skunks from opening it.

Eliminate bushy areas and piles of material or covers around the house where the skunks might hide and use as their base to terrorize you. These include piles of wood, compost or leaves that the skunks can use as their den. Keep the backyard area clean and clear of clutter. Do not leave any food leftovers or litter lying around at night and always put away pet food and bird feeders.

Another way I use to get rid of skunks from my garbage bin is to spray skunk repellant around it. I prefer home made products to do the job as they are environmentally friendly but you can easily buy ammonia or predator based solutions from the store. I usually put mustard or moth balls at the bottom of the trash can, or sprinkle hot pepper mixed with water around it. A rag soaked in ammonia can also do the trick but this one should be kept far from your plants. Remember the repellants need to be reapplied often especially during heavy rains.
